NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has voiced strong support for U.S.-led diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, expressing confidence that sustained negotiations could restore lasting peace in Europe. Speaking on December 2, 2025, ahead of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, Rutte praised Washington’s engagement and emphasized the alliance’s commitment to achieving a just resolution.

“We’re all working to bring war against Ukraine to an end with a just and lasting peace,” Rutte stated, highlighting NATO’s alignment with U.S. initiatives in Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We’re confident these efforts will eventually restore peace in Europe.”

Rutte’s remarks underscored both optimism for diplomatic progress and concern over Russia’s intensified winter attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, including energy systems intended to deprive populations of heat and electricity. By combining support for negotiations with condemnation of aggression, Rutte emphasized NATO’s dual strategy: pursuing peace while maintaining accountability for violations of international norms.

The Secretary General’s message reinforces NATO’s stance that coordinated transatlantic diplomacy is crucial to ending hostilities and stabilizing the region. As the alliance gathers ahead of the ministerial meeting, Rutte signaled confidence that American leadership, combined with collective NATO pressure, can produce a sustainable outcome that protects civilians and secures long-term European stability.
