Typhoon Fung-Wong has left a significant mark across East Asia, injuring at least 51 people in Taiwan and forcing the evacuation of more than 8,300 residents as torrential rains and powerful winds battered the island. The storm’s passage brought widespread flooding, landslides, and power outages, leading to school closures and transportation disruptions across multiple regions.
Hualien County on Taiwan’s eastern coast bore the brunt of the storm’s impact. Rivers overflowed their banks, sweeping away vehicles and inundating nearby communities. One car was reportedly carried off by floodwaters, highlighting the storm’s dangerous intensity. Emergency crews worked through the night to rescue stranded residents, secure vulnerable bridges, and restore essential infrastructure. The Central Weather Administration confirmed that the island’s mountainous areas experienced record rainfall, intensifying the risk of mudslides.
The devastation in Taiwan follows Fung-Wong’s earlier assault on the Philippines, where at least 27 people were killed and dozens more injured. Philippine authorities reported widespread damage to homes, roads, and power systems, particularly in Luzon. The typhoon’s path through the northern provinces left many communities isolated and in urgent need of aid.
Taiwan’s government issued swift evacuation orders and opened hundreds of temporary shelters to accommodate displaced families. Local officials praised the coordination between national and regional agencies, noting that early warnings and public preparedness helped prevent greater loss of life. Despite the destruction, there is cautious optimism as the storm weakens and moves northeast, away from the island.
As recovery efforts begin, both Taiwan and the Philippines face the daunting task of rebuilding. The aftermath of Typhoon Fung-Wong stands as a sobering reminder of the region’s vulnerability to powerful tropical systems—and the resilience of the communities that endure them.
