Garbage Truck Explodes as Oxygen Tanks Detonate Mid-Route

A Milwaukee Department of Public Works sanitation worker was hospitalized with a concussion and an eye injury after improperly discarded oxygen tanks exploded inside a garbage truck during a routine collection run. The blast occurred near 9th and Abert Place, just south of Capitol Drive, when the truck's packing blade began compacting the load and struck the pressurized canisters. Two workers were standing at the rear of the truck at the time of the explosion, with one knocked to the ground by the force of the blast.

DPW Sanitation Services Manager Rick Myers said crews later discovered four oxygen tanks total in the hopper, two that had already exploded and two more still intact, all of which had been placed in household trash carts in violation of city disposal rules. Myers said a piece of shrapnel became lodged in the injured worker's eye and had to be surgically removed, crediting the standard-issue safety glasses worn by sanitation crews with preventing a far more serious injury. "We are very fortunate that he was wearing his safety glasses, which is something that we train everybody to do," Myers said, adding that the incident could have been considerably worse.

Milwaukee police are now investigating how the tanks ended up in the trash, with officials reminding residents that pressurized canisters, including oxygen and propane tanks, are strictly prohibited from curbside disposal and can carry fines of up to $5,000 for violators. City officials noted that similar incidents have occurred in Milwaukee and other cities in recent years, underscoring a persistent public safety gap around the disposal of medical and pressurized equipment. The injured worker is expected to recover, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers sanitation crews face on seemingly routine collection routes.
