FBI Director Kash Patel has announced an aggressive international crackdown on online fraud networks, declaring that federal investigators are taking the fight directly to overseas scam operations rather than waiting for Americans to become victims. Speaking during a White House roundtable with President Donald Trump on October 21, Patel highlighted Operation Blackout, a global initiative targeting criminal networks operating large-scale scam compounds across Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Patel said the operation had dismantled more than 20 compounds and resulted in the seizure of more than $17 billion linked to scam operations, according to figures presented by the administration. The campaign involves coordinating with international law enforcement, conducting raids, seizing electronic devices and financial assets, and disrupting the digital infrastructure used to target victims. Authorities are also working to identify and free trafficking victims who are allegedly forced to carry out online fraud under the control of criminal syndicates.

Patel emphasized that the operation is designed to dismantle criminal organizations at their source, including networks behind cryptocurrency investment schemes, romance scams and other forms of online deception. These operations can involve so-called pig-butchering scams, in which fraudsters build relationships with victims over time before persuading them to invest money through fraudulent platforms. According to figures cited by the administration, federal authorities have warned more than 10,000 Americans about suspected scams, helping prevent an estimated $675 million in potential losses. Recent operations have also targeted networks in African countries, illustrating the FBI's efforts to pursue criminal groups as they move between regions. Patel warned that investigators would continue working with foreign governments and private technology companies to identify suspects, disrupt fraudulent accounts and pursue prosecutions. The FBI is urging anyone with information about suspected online fraud to report it through its official channels as the international crackdown continues.
