NIH Director Blasts Fauci for Hiding Private COVID Doubts From Public

NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya delivered a pointed critique of former infectious disease official Anthony Fauci, arguing that Fauci failed in his fundamental duty to the American people. In a recent appearance, Bhattacharya stated that the responsible course would have been for Fauci to make his private concerns public. “The responsible thing to do, that Tony Fauci didn’t do, was to make those concerns that he had public… he had a responsibility to the public to tell the public what his thinking actually was—and he failed to do that,” Bhattacharya said. The comments draw on newly examined diaries and text messages that reveal Fauci harbored doubts on key issues.

Those private writings reportedly show internal questioning around topics such as the origins of COVID-19 and the effectiveness of various mitigation measures. Bhattacharya, a co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration, has long argued that scientific debate was suppressed during the pandemic. He contends that Fauci, while heading a major research institute, projected a level of certainty that was not matched by the private assessments reflected in his own notes. This disconnect, according to the current NIH director, contributed to eroded public trust in health institutions.

The remarks come as the Trump administration continues efforts to examine pandemic decision-making and implement reforms at federal health agencies. Bhattacharya has positioned his leadership at the NIH as focused on restoring open scientific inquiry and transparency. By highlighting the gap between Fauci’s public messaging and private reservations, the current director is underscoring the need for greater accountability in how public health guidance is formulated and communicated. The ongoing review of diaries, texts, and related materials forms part of a broader push to ensure future crises are handled with greater honesty and scientific rigor.
