Burnham Takes Power, Admits Labour 'Not Good Enough' in Stunning Downing Street Debut

Britain has a new prime minister. Andy Burnham was formally invited by King Charles III to form a government on Monday, moments after Keir Starmer traveled to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation, ending a turbulent chapter for Labour that saw the party's popularity collapse just two years after a landslide election win. Standing outside 10 Downing Street for the first time as prime minister, Burnham struck a notably humble tone, telling the British public plainly, "I want to be honest with you: we have not been good enough. We need to be better. We will be." It was a rare moment of candor from a sitting prime minister, and one clearly designed to reset public trust after months of internal Labour turmoil.

Burnham's rise caps a remarkable political turnaround. The former Greater Manchester mayor, long nicknamed the "King of the North" for his advocacy on behalf of England's regions, stepped down from that post to win a by-election seat in Makerfield last month, clearing his path to the Labour leadership and, now, the premiership itself. He becomes the UK's seventh prime minister in just a decade, a churn rate that reflects the deep instability that has gripped British politics since the 2016 Brexit vote. Starmer's own downfall was fueled by sinking approval ratings, backlash over his handling of the economy and immigration, and the fallout from his appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington, a controversy that ultimately forced Mandelson's dismissal.

As prime minister, Burnham is expected to push an agenda built around shifting power away from Westminster, including a proposed "No 10 North" hub, alongside plans to expand council housing and increase public control over utilities in a bid to ease the cost of living for ordinary Britons. Whether his blunt admission of past failures translates into real momentum for Labour remains to be seen, particularly with a populist anti-immigration party having already eaten into the party's support base in recent local elections. For now, Burnham's message is one of humility paired with ambition, a bet that honesty about Labour's shortcomings will do more to win back skeptical voters than the polished promises that preceded it.
