In a spectacular show of naval power, the USS Ross (DDG-71) fired an SM-2 missile in a live-fire demonstration to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday.

The event showcased the precision and readiness of America’s naval forces, with the missile launch lighting up the horizon as sailors aboard the Ross looked on. The SM-2, a key component of the Navy’s air defense system, is designed to intercept aerial threats and protect fleet operations.

Officials described the demonstration as both a celebration and a reminder of the Navy’s enduring legacy of strength, innovation, and global presence.

“For 250 years, the U.S. Navy has stood watch — defending freedom and ensuring security at sea,” a Navy spokesperson said. “This display symbolizes that legacy and the dedication of every sailor who serves.”

The USS Ross, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, continues to play a vital role in maintaining maritime security and supporting allied operations around the world.
