Over 100 Million Americans Endure Scorching Weekend Heat Wave

More than 100 million Americans faced scorching temperatures across large parts of the country this weekend. The heat was especially intense across the Southwest, where cities such as Phoenix and Albuquerque saw temperatures approaching 99°F. Meteorologist Andrew Kozak of CBS News presented color-coded maps highlighting the widespread extreme conditions, along with fire weather and air quality alerts in multiple areas. The event is part of a broader North American heat pattern that has persisted since late June under a series of heat domes.

High temperatures and heat advisories have continued into August across the Southwest and portions of the Plains. While the numbers affected are significant, many observers have noted that hot conditions in mid-August are typical for much of the southern and western United States. Historical weather records show similar stretches of elevated temperatures in previous summers, particularly in desert and high-plains regions. Still, the combination of heat, dry conditions, and air quality concerns has prompted public safety warnings.

Local authorities and weather services have urged residents to take basic precautions, including staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activity during peak hours, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Fire weather alerts remain in effect in some zones due to the combination of heat and low humidity. As assessments of the current pattern continue, the focus remains on practical responses rather than long-range speculation.

For millions of Americans living in traditionally hot regions, the weekend’s temperatures, while uncomfortable, fit within the expected range of summer weather. The coming days will determine whether the heat dome eases or continues to linger over parts of the country. In the meantime, common-sense preparation remains the most effective way to manage the conditions.
