President Trump doubled down on his newfound warmth toward Mayor Zohran Mamdani, telling reporters he sincerely hopes the democratic socialist succeeds in running America's largest city. "I certainly hope he will be a great Mayor," Trump said, adding, "You have to understand, I want what's good for New York. I want what's good for the country... I want him to be a great Mayor." The remark came on the heels of their meeting at Gracie Mansion, the third face-to-face sit-down between the two men since Mamdani took office, and the first ever held on the mayor's own turf. Coming from a president who spent months branding Mamdani a communist during the campaign, the comment is another sign that their public rivalry has given way to something closer to a working partnership.

Trump has repeated versions of this sentiment at nearly every turn since Mamdani's election, from their first Oval Office meeting last November to a shoutout during the State of the Union, where he called the mayor a "nice guy" despite disagreeing with his policies. The consistency suggests the goodwill is not just a one-off photo opportunity but a deliberate, ongoing strategy from the White House to keep channels open with City Hall. For Mamdani, who has faced criticism from some fellow Democrats for engaging so closely with the administration, the president's public support offers useful cover as he pushes his affordability agenda. Whether the friendly rhetoric translates into real federal cooperation on housing, safety, and city funding remains the open question hanging over their unlikely alliance.
