A fast-moving brush fire in northern Nevada has exploded across more than 15,000 acres in just a few days, forcing tens of thousands of residents from their homes and prompting Governor Joe Lombardo to declare a state of emergency. The human-caused Hawk Fire is burning in Washoe County near Reno, where strong winds, low humidity, and bone-dry vegetation have produced extreme fire behavior. Flames have raced across hillsides, destroyed structures, and injured at least six people. Mandatory evacuation orders now cover approximately 42,000 residents, while another 45,000 people remain under evacuation warnings as the blaze continues to grow.

Nighttime video from the scene shows towering walls of orange flame lighting up the hills and thick smoke drifting across highways. Firefighters are working around the clock to contain the spread, supported by the Nevada National Guard. The combination of weather and terrain has made the fire especially difficult to control, with embers jumping containment lines and spotting new fires ahead of the main front. Residents describe sudden orders to leave with little time to gather belongings as the fire advanced faster than expected.

Governor Lombardo’s emergency declaration unlocks additional state resources and coordination with federal agencies to battle the blaze. The declaration underscores the seriousness of a fire that has already uprooted entire neighborhoods and threatened critical infrastructure near Reno. Officials are urging people in warning zones to prepare go-bags and stay alert for further orders as conditions remain highly volatile. Strong winds are forecast to continue, raising the risk of further rapid growth.

The human origin of the Hawk Fire has drawn attention as investigators work to determine exactly how it started. Whatever the precise cause, the result has been a landscape of charred hillsides, smoky skies, and congested evacuation routes. Six people have been hurt so far, though details on the severity of those injuries have not been fully released. Structures lost to the flames include both homes and outbuildings in the path of the advancing front.

Emergency responders are focusing on protecting remaining communities while trying to establish control lines in rugged terrain. The scale of the evacuations—nearly 87,000 people either ordered out or placed on notice—ranks among the largest recent wildfire displacements in the Reno area. Highways have been partially closed or slowed by smoke and fleeing traffic, complicating both evacuations and the movement of firefighting equipment.

As the Hawk Fire continues to burn, the coming days will determine whether firefighters can slow its advance or whether additional neighborhoods will be forced to leave. Residents under warnings are being told to monitor official channels closely. For those already evacuated, the wait to return home may stretch on while the National Guard and local crews work to bring the dangerous blaze under control.
