Trump Hails 'Great Breakthrough' as Hamas Agrees to Disarm at Last

President Trump declared a major diplomatic victory Friday, calling the newly announced agreement for Hamas to disarm in Gaza a "great breakthrough" that few believed was achievable just months ago. "Nobody's ever thought that would be possible, to disarm Hamas," Trump said, directly crediting the administration's pressure campaign against Iran for creating the conditions that made the deal possible. "That shows you how much success we're having with Iran, because if you go four months ago, five months ago, a deal like that would've been impossible," he added, calling it "a big step for the Middle East."

The agreement, brokered through Trump's Board of Peace, lays out a phased process in which Hamas would gradually relinquish its weapons, including heavy armaments, weapons production sites, and tunnel infrastructure, while Israeli forces simultaneously withdraw from Gaza in stages. As disarmament progresses, an international stabilization force is expected to work alongside a newly formed Palestinian technocratic police to take over responsibility for security in the territory. Trump insisted that Israel is fully on board with the framework, saying "Israel is very happy about it" and praising the country's cooperation throughout the negotiation process, even as an Israeli official's own public statement notably stopped short of an outright endorsement.

Despite the president's optimism, real obstacles remain before the deal can be considered a done one. Hamas has conditioned its cooperation on Israel fulfilling its own withdrawal commitments first, creating what analysts describe as a classic chicken-and-egg standoff, while Israeli officials have voiced open skepticism that Hamas will follow through on genuine disarmament at all. Adding to the uncertainty, a senior administration official confirmed that Iran actively pressured Hamas to reject the framework altogether, though that effort ultimately failed. Whether the agreement holds together through its "ups and downs," as Trump himself acknowledged, will depend heavily on whether both sides are willing to take the first difficult steps toward implementation.
