Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides did not hold back at the United Nations General Assembly, accusing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of hypocrisy of the highest order. Speaking from the same podium Erdoğan had used a day earlier to lecture the world on occupation and territorial integrity, Christodoulides pointed out that Turkish forces have remained stationed in northern Cyprus and Syria for decades. He called it selective sensitivity, arguing that Erdoğan condemns violations of sovereignty abroad while ignoring the ones his own country continues at home. It was a pointed, public rebuke delivered in front of the world's assembled leaders, and it landed exactly where Christodoulides meant it to.

The comments reach back to one of the longest-running disputes in modern diplomacy. Turkey's 1974 military intervention split Cyprus in two, and more than 50 years later, Turkish troops still occupy the island's north, an arrangement that has displaced thousands and defied repeated United Nations resolutions calling for withdrawal and reunification. Christodoulides used the moment to spotlight what critics have long called the UN's uneven enforcement of its own sovereignty principles, applied firmly in some conflicts and quietly overlooked in others. With Erdoğan's own General Assembly remarks on international law still fresh in delegates' minds, the exchange turned into one of the sharpest diplomatic confrontations of this year's session.
