President Donald Trump confirmed that U.S. forces used a classified system he referred to as the “discombobulator” during the January 3 military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Trump addressed the weapon in a recent interview, explaining that he could not provide full details but emphasizing its effectiveness in the operation.

Asked by an NBC reporter about the so‑called weapon, Trump said, “Discombobulator — well, I’m not allowed to talk about it.” He added that the system caused Venezuelan military equipment to “not work,” making it impossible for opposing forces to launch rockets or deploy defenses as U.S. forces moved in. “They were ready — they pressed buttons and nothing worked,” Trump stated, asserting that U.S. forces suffered no personnel or equipment losses during the raid. 

The president’s comments coincide with broader reporting that the U.S. used specialized capabilities to disrupt Venezuelan defenses as part of *Operation Absolute Resolve*, the codename for the intervention led by U.S. military and federal forces in Caracas. While details of the “discombobulator” remain classified, Trump’s description aligns with statements that advanced electronic or directed‑energy tools were employed to neutralize hostile systems, allowing U.S. forces to accomplish the mission with minimal resistance. 

The operation drew international attention and controversy, with Maduro’s capture and transport to the United States prompting debate over sovereignty and military authority. The United States justified the intervention as a law‑enforcement‑supported action connected to Maduro’s indictment on narcotrafficking and related charges, while Venezuelan officials and allied governments criticized it as a violation of international norms. 

Trump’s comments about the “discombobulator” have sparked public curiosity, though experts caution that classified military technologies often combine multiple systems — including cyber operations and electronic warfare — rather than a single “magic” device.
