A senior commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps just threw down a defiant challenge to Washington over one of the world's most critical oil chokepoints. In remarks aired on Iranian state television, IRGC Deputy Commander Ali Fadavi declared that Iran and Oman alone govern the Strait of Hormuz, insisting the two countries write and enforce its rules. He dismissed any American claim to a say in the matter, arguing the United States sits ten thousand kilometers away and therefore has no rights there, before branding Washington the Great Satan and accusing it of trying to bully the region.

The comments land squarely inside Iran's ongoing standoff with the United States and Israel, a conflict that erupted on February 28, 2026 and has left the strait, a route that normally carries roughly a fifth of the world's oil, running at a fraction of its usual traffic. Tehran has used its grip on the waterway as a bargaining chip, tying any return to normal shipping to an end to the fighting, relief from sanctions, and other demands pressed through mediators including Oman. Fadavi's remarks echo a now-familiar pattern from Iranian military leaders asserting dominance over the Gulf, even as shipping volumes remain severely depressed and international pressure over the blocked waterway continues to mount.
