New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled what his administration is calling the city's first-ever municipal Strategy to Combat Antisemitism, framing it as a direct response to a rise in hate crimes targeting Jewish New Yorkers. In a video announcing the plan, Mamdani invoked a teaching from Jewish tradition that sustaining one soul is akin to sustaining an entire world, and pledged that Jewish New Yorkers would be, in his words, safe and celebrated. The strategy directs millions of dollars toward hate crime prevention, physical security upgrades at synagogues and Jewish institutions, expanded Holocaust education in schools, and support for Jewish cultural sites including the Museum of Jewish Heritage. Officials described it as a whole-of-government effort spanning multiple city agencies, aimed at both protecting Jewish residents and expanding recognition of their contributions to the city.

The announcement lands at a politically delicate moment for Mamdani, who has faced sustained criticism from some Jewish organizations over his sharp denunciations of Israel's conduct in Gaza, criticism some groups argue has itself fueled antisemitic sentiment in the city. The Anti-Defamation League, which has been tracking the administration through what it calls a Mamdani Monitor, dismissed the plan as insufficient, with its CEO arguing the mayor's own rhetoric undercuts the effort. Notably, the strategy stops short of adopting a formal definition of antisemitism, instead drawing loosely from multiple existing frameworks, a choice that has drawn criticism from those who say police and schools need a clearer standard to work from. Still, the plan received praise from some city officials and Jewish groups who welcomed the new funding, even as the debate over whether it goes far enough, or addresses the right causes, is likely to continue.
