U.S. forces struck another blow against one of Latin America's most violent trafficking networks on September 16, sinking a floating refueling station tied to the Los Choneros cartel in the Eastern Pacific. Operating under Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere and the direction of U.S. Southern Command, sailors and Marines boarded and cleared the vessel before removing everyone aboard and sending it to the bottom of the ocean. Intelligence confirmed the ship's ties to Los Choneros, a narco-terrorist organization based in Ecuador, and those pulled from the vessel were handed over to Ecuadorian authorities rather than detained by U.S. forces. It marks the sixth such interdiction in recent weeks, part of a steadily escalating campaign to choke off the logistics keeping cartel drug shipments moving across open water.

SOUTHCOM Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan framed the operation as both a security measure and a humanitarian one, saying the mission stands alongside Ecuadorian partners to relentlessly pursue narco-terrorists who prey on citizens and undermine hemispheric security. He described the strike as deliberate, lawful, and precise, arguing it makes people safer on both sides of the border, from Ecuador to the United States. The interdiction is the latest move in a broader, months-long push by the Trump administration and the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition to dismantle at-sea trafficking infrastructure piece by piece. With six vessels destroyed in a matter of weeks, JTF-WHEM says it has no intention of slowing down, promising continued operations aimed at cutting off cartel supply chains before they reach shore.
