Starlink is now operating more than 11,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, delivering high-speed internet to millions of users across the planet. The constellation has grown into the largest ever deployed, with tracking data placing the number of spacecraft in orbit above the 11,000 mark as of early October 2026. Running a network of this size safely is regarded by many observers as an achievement equal to the launch campaign that built it. The satellites continuously perform precise station-keeping maneuvers to maintain their assigned positions and avoid interference with one another. SpaceX regularly publishes trajectory data so other satellite operators can plan their own flights and coordination. An automated system monitors potential close approaches and can command collision-avoidance maneuvers when necessary.

SpaceX has also been systematically lowering large portions of the constellation to altitudes below 500 kilometers. At these lower heights, any satellite that fails or reaches the end of its life will naturally reenter the atmosphere and burn up far more quickly than objects left at higher orbits. This design choice reduces long-term orbital debris risk and supports sustainable operations as the fleet continues to expand. The combination of active management, data sharing, and rapid deorbit capability allows the company to maintain a functional and relatively clean orbital environment despite the unprecedented scale. Starlink’s growth continues to reshape global connectivity while testing new standards for responsible large-constellation operations in low Earth orbit.
