President Donald Trump highlighted one of his administration’s most aggressive health-care wins this week, declaring that the United States is now “paying the lowest price in the world” for select high-cost medications. Speaking confidently, Trump said critics long insisted such pricing reform was impossible because “you couldn’t get the countries to agree to it.” His response: “I did.”

The administration’s Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) model—revived, expanded, and enforced through hardline negotiations—has reshaped how certain pharmaceuticals are priced for Medicare. By tying U.S. drug costs directly to the lowest prices paid abroad, and by signaling tariffs on uncooperative nations, the White House secured deals that dramatically reduced costs for key medications. One standout example: a weight-loss drug that previously cost roughly $1,300 in the United States will fall to $125–$140 under the MFN structure.

According to White House briefings issued in September and October 2025, major pharmaceutical manufacturers including Pfizer and AstraZeneca agreed to adopt these pricing standards beginning in 2026 for Medicare patients. Officials project that the agreements could save the federal government **billions of dollars annually** and ease cost burdens on seniors who rely on the most expensive therapies.

Supporters argue that the deals show exactly how Trump’s negotiating style—direct pressure, bold targets, and international leverage—can break through barriers that past administrations treated as immovable. Instead of allowing foreign governments to pay minimal prices while Americans covered the global difference, Trump sought parity and won it.

Critics, however, claim the reforms apply to a limited number of drugs and do not fully resolve broader disparities across the pharmaceutical market.
