Trinidad and Tobago has emerged as an unexpected flashpoint in the escalating U.S.-Venezuela standoff, aligning closely with President Trump’s renewed campaign against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. The small Caribbean nation has hosted U.S. warships in Port of Spain and participated in joint military exercises, signaling its firm support for American operations in the region.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar publicly endorsed U.S. airstrikes on suspected Venezuelan drug boats, which have resulted in 64 fatalities since April. She criticized regional opponents of the U.S. campaign, asserting the necessity of forceful action to curb illicit trafficking. This stance reflects Trinidad’s commitment to reducing drug smuggling that contributes to the island’s high homicide rate, which exceeds 600 annual deaths.

However, Trinidad’s alignment with Washington comes at a cost. Joint development talks with Venezuela over key offshore gas fields have been suspended, jeopardizing a sector that constitutes 40% of the nation’s economy. The pause has already contributed to job losses, including 600 positions from a recent plant closure, highlighting the economic stakes involved in the geopolitical alignment.

Trinidad and Tobago’s cooperation underscores the strategic importance of even small nations in U.S. foreign policy, particularly in the Caribbean. By siding with Trump’s aggressive approach, the island nation aims to strengthen security and combat drug trafficking, despite the economic sacrifices associated with disrupted energy partnerships.
