Chicago Weekend Violence Leaves 5 Dead, Dozens Wounded Citywide

Chicago endured another violent weekend, with at least 35 people shot and five killed in shootings across the city, according to early reports. The most severe incident took place on the South Side, where a drive-by shooting erupted during a Juneteenth celebration near 95th Street and Princeton Avenue. Police say at least 12 people were shot when gunfire was unleashed from a red SUV into the crowd gathered for the community event, making it one of the largest mass-casualty shootings the city has seen this year.

Footage from the scene, captured overnight by ABC7 Chicago, showed a heavy police presence with patrol cars lining the block and dozens of yellow evidence markers placed throughout the area to document spent shell casings. Officers could be seen working the scene late into the night as investigators began piecing together what led to the attack on what was meant to be a peaceful community gathering. Authorities have not yet announced any arrests or identified a motive behind the shooting as the investigation continues.

The Juneteenth shooting added to an already violent weekend total across the city, with the overall numbers of wounded and killed continuing to be updated as officials confirm details from multiple incidents. City and police officials are expected to provide further updates as investigators work to identify those responsible and determine whether any of the weekend's shootings are connected. Community leaders have voiced shock and grief over the attack, given its timing during a celebration meant to bring residents together.
