A joint investigation is underway after a fatal incident at a Boulder City, Nevada, power substation raised concerns of terrorism. On February 19, 2026, 28-year-old Dawson Noah Maloney of Albany, New York, rammed a rented Nissan Sentra through the substation’s secured gate before taking his own life with a self-inflicted shotgun wound. Authorities responded quickly and confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill, Boulder City Police Chief Timothy Shea, and FBI Special Agent in Charge Chris Delzotto detailed the investigation, emphasizing that the rapid response prevented any disruption to the city’s power supply. Officers discovered multiple firearms, body armor, and explosive components, including thermite and ammonium nitrate, inside Maloney’s vehicle and at a nearby hotel. Additional searches in Albany uncovered firearms and electronic devices, suggesting premeditated intent, though investigators found no confirmed ties to organized extremist groups.

Maloney had reportedly made prior statements to family members regarding self-harm and seeking media attention, which factored into the authorities’ assessment of the situation as potentially terrorism-related. The joint LVMPD-FBI probe examined his cross-country travel and the planning evident in the materials recovered, highlighting the significance of securing critical infrastructure nationwide.

Officials reassured the public that the substation’s security measures effectively prevented broader harm. The incident underscores the ongoing vigilance required to protect essential services and maintain public safety, even when attacks are carried out by individuals without direct affiliations to known extremist organizations. Authorities continue to analyze evidence to understand the full scope of Maloney’s planning and motives.
