Sen. John Fetterman used a September 26 appearance at the Texas Tribune Festival to once again reject the idea that Israel's war in Gaza amounts to genocide, telling the audience, "This idea that it's been a genocide or whatever... that's just not what a genocide is." The Pennsylvania Democrat has repeatedly staked out this position over the past two years, describing Israel's military campaign as a justified response to Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack rather than a systematic effort to destroy the Palestinian population. Fetterman has consistently pushed back on genocide accusations from figures across the political spectrum, previously dismissing similar claims from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and even Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and famously telling South Africa to "sit this one out" after it brought genocide charges against Israel at the International Court of Justice. His remarks put him squarely at odds with a growing number of voices, including UN-backed inquiries and international rights groups, that have used the genocide label to describe the war's toll.

The comments underscore a deepening rift within the Democratic Party over Israel policy, with Fetterman emerging as one of its most outspoken pro-Israel voices even as younger, more progressive members increasingly break from that stance. He has argued that Israel has taken steps inconsistent with a genocide, including facilitating medical evacuations for Gazans and participating in international humanitarian efforts like UN-backed health initiatives. Critics counter that such measures don't negate the scale of civilian casualties and destruction documented throughout the war, and international bodies have reached sharply different conclusions about how to characterize Israel's conduct. Fetterman's remarks are likely to reignite the same fierce debate that has followed him since he first began speaking out on the issue, drawing both praise from Israel's supporters and renewed criticism from progressives within his own party.
