A dramatic operation deep inside Gaza City has ended with Israel capturing one of Hamas's most closely guarded figures: the head of the organization's General Security Apparatus, effectively the group's version of Israel's own Shin Bet. Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that a senior Hamas terrorist had been arrested, describing it as consistent with Israel's broader policy of pursuing and dismantling Hamas's infrastructure rather than waiting for threats to materialize. According to Israeli security officials, the man taken into custody is Mu'in al-Arabid, who ran the internal apparatus responsible for protecting Hamas's senior leadership. Reports indicate he was wounded during the raid before being extracted from Gaza and brought into Israel for medical treatment.

The unit al-Arabid led functions as the nerve center of Hamas's internal survival network, managing far more than basic security. It coordinates the movements of top Hamas figures, arranging secure travel between hideouts and emergency locations whenever leaders need to relocate quickly. The apparatus also handles encrypted and secure communications, gathers intelligence on Israeli military activity for use by Hamas commanders, and keeps tabs on suspected informants within Gaza. On top of that, it has served as an internal enforcement arm, tracking and suppressing dissent or opposition from within Hamas's own ranks, making al-Arabid's capture a significant blow to how the organization protects and manages itself.

The operation itself was chaotic and heavily contested. Palestinian sources described a raid carried out in the Al-Katiba area of western Gaza City, with reports suggesting the ground force may have been an Israeli-backed Palestinian militia operating with Israeli air support rather than IDF special forces acting alone. As the operation unfolded, intense airstrikes and artillery fire hit the surrounding area, reportedly to help the extraction team withdraw safely after being discovered by Hamas operatives. Gaza medical sources said at least eight people were killed in the strikes, and video circulating from the area purportedly shows the vehicle used by the raiding force as it fled the scene. Hamas's own internal security division responded by warning Gaza residents not to spread rumors about the incident, an order that inadvertently underscored just how sensitive the loss of their security chief truly is.

The capture comes at a moment of intensified Israeli pressure on Hamas, with Katz stressing that Israeli forces have no plans to leave Gaza until the strip is fully demilitarized and Hamas is disarmed. He noted that Israeli troops now control roughly seventy percent of the territory, an area he described as stripped of tunnels, homes, and residents amid ongoing operations. Israeli officials view the removal of a figure with al-Arabid's level of access, someone privy to leadership locations, communication channels, and internal intelligence, as a potentially serious setback for Hamas's ability to protect its remaining commanders. Whether the information he may provide leads to further high-value strikes or captures remains to be seen, but for now, Hamas has lost the man who quite literally knew where all its secrets were hidden.
