US private payrolls rose by 90,000 in September, marking the strongest increase in three months and beating economists’ estimates that had centered around 75,000. The ADP National Employment Report showed hiring accelerated after a recent slowdown, with the prior month revised lower to a gain of 36,000. Education and health services led the way with 55,000 new positions, while leisure and hospitality added 22,000. Offsetting those gains were losses in financial activities of 16,000 and professional and business services of 11,000. Base pay increased 3.2 percent year over year and gross pay rose 4.7 percent, according to the data. ADP’s chief economist described the report as strong after three months of softer job creation. The figures arrive just ahead of the official government nonfarm payrolls release scheduled for Friday.
The rebound suggests private-sector employment retained momentum despite uneven performance across industries. Goods-producing sectors contributed 31,000 jobs overall, including solid gains in manufacturing and construction. Service providers accounted for the majority of the increase, highlighting continued demand in healthcare and hospitality. Analysts noted the pay growth remained solid even as hiring patterns varied by sector. The report provides an early signal of labor-market conditions heading into the broader monthly employment data. Markets and policymakers will examine whether the private-sector strength carries through in the official numbers. Overall, the September reading points to a private labor market that has regained some traction after a brief period of slower expansion.
