A powerful example of teamwork and preparedness unfolded off the coast of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, where a missing surfer was rescued after more than 30 hours stranded on a dangerous and inaccessible reef. The successful operation showcased the U.S. Coast Guard’s ability to execute complex rescues under extreme conditions through seamless coordination across multiple agencies.

The 68-year-old surfer had been missing since January 8, 2026, after entering the water near Surfer’s Beach, an area known for strong currents, jagged reefs, and rapidly changing conditions. Rough seas, darkness, and low visibility complicated search efforts, raising serious concerns as time passed with no sign of the individual.

Coast Guard watchstanders coordinated an extensive search operation involving aircrews from Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, alongside support from U.S. Border Patrol, Puerto Rico Police, and local emergency responders. Late into the night, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew made a critical breakthrough using thermal imaging technology, detecting a faint heat signature on a reef where the surfer had been stranded.

Video footage from the rescue captures the moment the survivor signaled rescuers by waving his surfboard, a decisive action that allowed the aircrew to pinpoint his location. Despite challenging nighttime conditions, the helicopter crew executed a precise hoist, lifting the surfer to safety without incident. He was assessed as stable but dehydrated and later reunited with his family, who were informed of his condition during an emotional call following the rescue.

The operation stands as a clear demonstration of the Coast Guard’s motto, “Semper Paratus,” meaning “Always Ready.” It underscores the life-saving impact of interagency cooperation, advanced technology, and the professionalism of America’s maritime first responders. In a situation where minutes and decisions mattered, disciplined coordination and resolve prevented a tragic outcome and delivered a life safely back to shore.
