Dramatic new video released today captures a China Coast Guard cutter, identified as CCG-21585, maneuvering tightly and making direct contact with the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources support vessel BRP Datu Magat Salamat north of Abad Santos Shoal. The incident unfolded during a routine fuel subsidy mission to Filipino fishermen roughly 54 nautical miles off Palawan’s coast and just over six nautical miles from the shoal itself. Philippine officials describe the action as a deliberate ramming that damaged the boat’s railings and deck, though no injuries were reported. The location sits firmly inside waters Manila considers its exclusive economic zone, only about 100 kilometers from Philippine territory yet more than 800 kilometers from the nearest Chinese landmass.

Chinese sources offer a sharply different account, claiming the Philippine vessel ignored repeated warnings and cut across the Coast Guard ship’s bow, resulting in the collision inside disputed Spratly Islands waters. The footage, recorded from the Philippine boat’s perspective, has already intensified long-running tensions over freedom of navigation and resource rights in the South China Sea. The episode raises immediate questions about how both sides will respond, whether similar close encounters will escalate further, and what this means for Filipino fishermen who rely on these waters for their livelihood. As the competing narratives spread, the latest confrontation underscores how fragile the situation remains in one of the world’s most contested maritime zones.
