President Trump dismissed as “laughable” the European Union’s proposal for Canada to become its first associate member. He described Canada as a terrible trade partner and warned that any move he views as hostile would trigger very serious tariffs or a halt to trade with Europe on many goods. The comments came in direct response to the EU offer, which seeks deeper cooperation with Canada on defense, critical minerals, Arctic issues, and technology. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed the initiative as a way to strengthen democratic partnerships amid ongoing friction with the United States.

The latest remarks land against a backdrop of already elevated trade tensions. Trump has previously imposed 50 percent tariffs and import bans on a range of Canadian products including dairy, automobiles, and alcohol, prompting Ottawa to look for new partners beyond the United States. By linking the EU proposal to potential retaliation against Europe itself, Trump has raised the stakes of the dispute and left open questions about how far the measures might go. The exchange underscores the growing pressure on traditional North American trade relationships and the scramble by Canada to diversify its economic ties.
