At just 15 years old, American innovator Benjamin Choi engineered an AI-driven prosthetic arm using a $75 3D printer, fishing line, EEG stickers, and more than 23,000 lines of code—a breakthrough that showcased the power of individual ingenuity over corporate excess.

His prototype, built for around $300, delivered 95% accuracy and achieved a remarkable four-ton load rating after over 75 design iterations. The results were extraordinary not only for a teenager working with humble tools, but also when compared to the staggering prices of the modern prosthetics industry.

As of 2025, standard prosthetic arms begin at around $10,000, advanced bionic models easily pass $100,000, and implant-based systems can exceed $400,000—including elite research devices such as the Modular Prosthetic Limb supported by invasive neural interfaces and dense sensor arrays. These prices leave millions of amputees without access in the U.S. and around the world.

Choi chose not to patent or privatize his design. Instead, he released the work as open source, making it free for researchers, clinicians, and future inventors. In doing so, he underscored an uncomfortable truth: high-performance prosthetics do not need to cost more than a new car—or a house. They can be built by determined young Americans armed with creativity, code, and a mission to solve real problems.

Now 20 years old in 2025, Choi studies applied mathematics and machine learning at Harvard, publishes research in neural engineering, and works as an intern at D.E. Shaw, one of America’s premier quantitative firms. Though his prosthetic arm remains in the prototype stage while it moves through early regulatory pathways, his ongoing research is bringing the project closer to clinical validation.

Choi’s work illustrates a core principle long championed by those who believe in American strength and innovation: when barriers are lifted and young innovators are empowered, the United States produces breakthroughs that no bureaucracy or over-priced industry can match. His open-source AI prosthetic stands as a challenge to the medtech establishment—and a promise to amputees waiting for affordable, life-changing solutions.
