Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi offered a strikingly candid admission about the uncertainty surrounding Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, saying "there are lots of indications that Mojtaba Khamenei is under threat from the Americans, and there are other indications that he is in full control, he is in full order." Mojtaba, the son of Ali Khamenei, ascended to the role after his father was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28, 2026, an attack that also injured Mojtaba himself and killed several other family members. He has not appeared in public since taking power in March, fueling months of rumors about his health, ranging from a broken foot to claims he may be in a coma, with Israeli officials repeatedly signaling he remains a target for elimination.

Despite the acknowledged uncertainty, Araghchi insisted that Iran's chain of command remains intact, stating, "we receive his comments and orders and opinions, and there is national consensus on decision-making." Araghchi has made similar assurances throughout the year, previously telling reporters that Khamenei is in good health and has full control of the country's affairs, even as he acknowledged that security concerns have limited the new leader's public appearances. The extended absence has left Iran in an unusual position: projecting stability and continuity in leadership while its own top diplomat concedes that basic facts about the supreme leader's safety and condition remain genuinely unclear. That contradiction has only deepened international speculation about the true state of Iran's leadership nearly seven months into Mojtaba Khamenei's tenure.
