TrumpSlams Birthright Citizenship Ruling as “Horrible Decision” Costing Trillions

President Donald Trump sharply criticized the Supreme Court’s June 2026 decision upholding birthright citizenship, calling it a “horrible decision” that will cost the United States trillions of dollars over the years. Speaking in an interview with Wayne Allyn Root, Trump expressed strong disappointment with the 6-3 ruling that struck down his January 2025 executive order. That order had sought to limit automatic citizenship for children born on U.S. soil to parents who are in the country illegally or on temporary visas. The president has long argued that the current interpretation of the 14th Amendment creates a powerful incentive for illegal immigration and places an enormous fiscal burden on American taxpayers.

Chief Justice John Roberts authored the majority opinion, holding that the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to nearly all children born in the United States. The ruling reaffirmed more than 150 years of precedent and blocked the Trump administration’s effort to narrow the policy through executive action. Justices Thomas, Alito, and Gorsuch dissented. Trump has maintained that the decision ignores the practical and financial consequences for the country, including long-term costs related to education, healthcare, and social services for those who gain citizenship under the current system.

Despite the setback, the president has signaled that the fight is not over. He has called on Congress to address the issue through legislation and has reiterated his view that birthright citizenship, as currently applied, undermines the integrity of American citizenship and national sovereignty. The ruling stands as one of the more significant judicial checks on the administration’s immigration agenda, yet Trump continues to frame the outcome as both legally and fiscally damaging to the nation. His comments underscore an ongoing commitment to reforming policies he believes encourage unlawful entry and strain public resources.
