Deadly Derecho Slams Midwest with 100 MPH Winds and Flash Flooding

A powerful derecho tore across the Midwest on August 11, 2026, unleashing destructive winds approaching 100 mph, torrential rain, flash flooding, and confirmed tornadoes near Chicago. The long-lived storm complex raced through Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, toppling trees, damaging structures, and cutting power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses. ABC correspondent Alex Perez reported live from the Chicago area, capturing scenes of downed trees, flooded streets, and widespread structural damage. At least three people lost their lives in the storms, including a four-year-old boy killed when a tree crashed onto a home in Indiana. Cleanup efforts are underway as residents and emergency crews work to restore power and clear debris.

The National Weather Service identified the system as a derecho, a rare and intense line of storms capable of producing sustained high winds over hundreds of miles. Peak gusts reached 99 mph in Gary, Indiana, while multiple tornadoes touched down in the Chicago suburbs and surrounding areas. Heavy rainfall triggered dangerous flash flooding, particularly in parts of Ohio, where rescue operations were required and roads became impassable. Power outages stretched across multiple states, leaving communities in the dark and complicating recovery. Forecasters continue to monitor the region for additional rounds of severe weather in the coming days.

Communities across the affected states are pulling together in the aftermath, with first responders, utility crews, and volunteers working around the clock. The tragic loss of life, especially that of a young child, has underscored the deadly potential of these extreme summer storms. Local officials have urged residents to remain cautious as flooding risks persist and more severe weather is possible. The scale of the damage highlights both the vulnerability of infrastructure to such events and the resilience of Midwest communities facing adversity. Recovery will take time, but coordinated efforts are already helping restore normalcy where possible.
