Bali Ferry Erupts in Flames, 172 Rescued From Deadly Sea Inferno

A passenger ferry traveling from Bali to Lombok erupted into flames early Wednesday morning, triggering a frantic rescue operation in the treacherous waters of the Lombok Strait. The fire broke out around 4:15 a.m. as the vessel battled waves reaching up to 13 feet, forcing navy ships, patrol boats, and a helicopter to scramble to the scene. Rescue teams ultimately pulled 172 people from the burning ferry, but a 19-year-old woman was found dead and at least two other passengers were injured in the chaos. Among those saved were two Australian tourists who reportedly floated in the rough seas for hours before being recovered.

The disaster has been compounded by a troubling discovery: the ferry's official manifest listed only 131 people onboard, far fewer than the number actually rescued. Officials are now investigating how dozens of additional passengers, along with 44 vehicles and 53 motorcycles, ended up aboard the vessel without being properly recorded. The mismatch has raised urgent questions about oversight and safety enforcement on Indonesian ferry routes, with authorities probing both the cause of the fire and the apparent overcrowding that may have made the emergency far more dangerous than it should have been.

Search and rescue efforts are continuing as officials work to confirm whether anyone remains unaccounted for, given the discrepancy between the manifest and the actual number of people aboard. The incident marks the second major ferry emergency in Indonesian waters in recent memory, reigniting concerns about maritime safety standards across the archipelago nation, where ferries remain a critical, and often overburdened, mode of transport between islands. As investigators piece together what went wrong, survivors are being treated and reunited with family while the search continues along the strait.
