A 16-year-old behind the wheel of a white Cadillac Escalade jumped the curb in New Jersey and plowed straight into a group of six classmates walking home after school, sending them flying and trapping one under the massive SUV. The victims, all between 14 and 16 years old, were simply strolling along the sidewalk when the vehicle veered off the road and slammed into them. Five of the injured teens were rushed to a local hospital by ambulance while the sixth, who had to be pulled free from underneath the car by first responders, was flown by medical helicopter in critical condition. Witnesses described the scene as pure chaos with people freezing in shock as the Escalade came to a stop. One friend of a victim, Arturo Caselin, said it was crazy to see someone trapped and helpless while everyone just stood watching, unable to do anything until help arrived. He expressed relief that his friend survived the nightmare. The driver was quickly restrained by a bystander who slapped him into a full nelson and declared a citizen’s arrest until police showed up.

Authorities booked the teen into the Camden County Juvenile Detention Center on serious charges including one count of second-degree aggravated assault, six counts of third-degree aggravated assault, and one count of joyriding. The dramatic takedown by the bystander prevented any attempt to leave the scene after the devastating impact. Community members and school officials are still reeling from the sudden violence that turned an ordinary after-school walk into a medical emergency for half a dozen kids. Investigators continue looking into exactly how the Escalade ended up on the sidewalk and why the driver lost control or chose that path. The injured teens remain under medical care as they begin the long road to recovery from the shocking collision. The incident has left parents and students in the area questioning safety on the very streets they use every day.
