Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman has announced a major mineral discovery that could reshape the kingdom’s place in global supply chains. Exploration and geological studies at the Jabal Sayid project in the Madinah region have identified an estimated 110 million tonnes of ore containing high concentrations of rare earth elements, especially the heavier varieties that are hardest to source, along with promising levels of uranium. The scale of the resource places the site among the most significant rare earth developments currently under way worldwide. If further testing confirms the grades and economic recoverability, the find would give Saudi Arabia a stronger foothold in the strategic minerals needed for advanced electronics, electric vehicles, and defense technologies while also supporting its civilian nuclear ambitions.

The announcement arrives as the kingdom accelerates efforts to diversify far beyond oil and gas. Officials have already linked the deposit to broader plans for building an integrated value chain that covers mining, processing, and refining rather than simply exporting raw material. The presence of both heavy rare earths and uranium in the same ore body raises the prospect of dual benefits for critical-mineral security and future nuclear-fuel needs. Questions now center on how quickly the resource can be developed, what partnerships will be formed to extract and process it, and how the discovery will alter Saudi Arabia’s geopolitical leverage in markets long dominated by a handful of other producers.
