Senior police leaders in the United Kingdom have issued a formal apology after admitting they withheld critical intelligence about threats against Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters ahead of the club’s Europa League match against Aston Villa in Birmingham. Newly disclosed documents confirm that authorities had received high-confidence warnings as early as September 2025 that local individuals were preparing to arm themselves against Israeli fans attending the November 6 match at Villa Park.

Despite the intelligence, West Midlands Police moved to recommend and enforce a full ban on away supporters, publicly attributing the decision to concerns over fan behavior and safety amid heightened Israel-Gaza tensions. The match proceeded behind closed away gates, with Aston Villa securing a 2-0 victory and no major disorder reported.

The full scope of the threats only emerged during a Home Affairs Committee hearing on January 6, 2026, where senior officers acknowledged that intelligence regarding potential armed attacks by local vigilante groups had not been shared with lawmakers or the public. Chief Constable Craig Guildford apologized for the omission, stating that Members of Parliament did not explicitly request the information, a defense that drew immediate criticism.

MPs across party lines, along with Jewish organizations and community leaders, accused the force of misleading the public and engaging in two-tier policing. Critics argued that the decision to frame the ban around supporter conduct rather than credible antisemitic threats amounted to a failure to protect Jewish fans and an attempt to avoid confronting community-based extremism.

Several public figures called for Guildford’s resignation, describing the episode as evidence of institutional bias and cowardice in the face of antisemitic violence. They contend that withholding the intelligence not only undermined public trust but also set a dangerous precedent by effectively penalizing the threatened group rather than addressing those planning violence.

While police officials maintain that their actions prevented potential unrest, the revelations have intensified scrutiny of how British authorities handle security threats involving Jewish communities. The controversy continues to raise serious questions about transparency, accountability, and equal protection under the law.
