A free climb up Mount Yonah in north Georgia turned into a life-threatening ordeal on the evening of August 25, when an unidentified climber found himself stranded on the mountain's west face with no way to safely move up or down. The man called 911 just after 7 p.m., telling dispatchers he was stuck roughly 260 feet up the 3,166-foot ridge in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. Emergency crews from White County Public Safety responded quickly, deploying a drone to pinpoint his exact location on the cliff. What they found was a man perched on a ledge measuring just 20 inches by 20 inches, with no safe path forward in either direction.

With the climber's exact position confirmed, White County firefighter Will Roper took on the task of rappelling down the cliff face himself to reach him. Video captured from the drone shows Roper descending on ropes, maneuvering carefully beneath the stranded man before securing him in a harness and clipping him into the rescue line. It was a moment Roper later admitted carried real weight, despite his training. "I've done a lot with dummies and a lot with other firefighters in training, but that's the first time that I've ever done it, kind of in the heat of the moment with a live subject," he said, adding that "it was a little nerve-racking going over the edge." From the time crews arrived on scene to the moment the climber was safely brought down, the entire operation took approximately 42 minutes.

What made the rescue especially memorable, according to Roper, was just how composed the climber remained throughout the ordeal. Despite being stranded high on a rock face in the dark with no clear way out, the man reportedly stayed remarkably calm, prompting Roper to joke with him mid-rescue, asking, "Have you been rescued before? You're pretty good at this." Video from the scene shows the climber dressed casually in sneakers and a backpack, a look that stood in sharp contrast to the technical rope systems and safety gear used by the rescue team working to bring him down.

The successful rescue highlights both the risks that come with free climbing unfamiliar terrain and the training that allows local emergency crews to respond effectively when things go wrong. White County Public Safety officials publicly thanked everyone involved, crediting the coordinated response of multiple agencies working together for the operation's smooth outcome. The climber, whose identity has not been released, was reported uninjured despite the hours spent stranded on the cliffside. For Roper, who has hiking and climbing experience on Mount Yonah himself, the rescue marked a personal first: the moment his training moved from practice scenarios to a real person depending on him 260 feet above the ground.
