Speaking from the Oval Office, President Trump painted a picture of a Canada desperate to make peace but still playing dirty on trade. They want to have a deal with us, he said. They call us all the time. But in the same breath, he accused America's northern neighbor of treating the United States very unfairly, pointing specifically to what he has repeatedly called Canada's punishing tariffs on US farmers. The comments land just as the trade war between the two countries hits a new peak, with 50 percent US tariffs already in place on billions of dollars in Canadian goods and fresh import bans set to take effect September 29, following talks that collapsed and a wave of Canadian retaliation hitting American steel, dairy, and alcohol exports.

Trump did not hold back on how he ranks Canada among US trading partners, calling it one of the worst countries to deal with despite how heavily the Canadian economy leans on American buyers. He predicted the dynamic would flip soon, insisting Canada would eventually come back asking to drop its tariffs and apologize for how things unfolded. The tone fits squarely within his broader America First approach to trade, one built on the belief that the US holds the stronger hand and that allies who push back too hard will ultimately need Washington more than Washington needs them. Whether Ottawa sees it the same way remains an open question, but for now, the tariffs stand and the standoff continues.
