Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar delivered a sharp and uncompromising condemnation of Iran’s ruling regime during a speech in Baku, Azerbaijan, accusing Tehran of carrying out a “barbaric massacre” against its own people. Speaking roughly 130 miles from Iran’s border, Sa’ar’s remarks carried both symbolic and strategic weight, underscoring Israel’s message at a critical geographic and diplomatic crossroads.

Sa’ar referenced Iran’s January 2026 protest crackdown, during which reports estimate that more than 36,000 people were killed as the regime moved aggressively to suppress nationwide unrest. The crackdown was accompanied by a sweeping internet shutdown beginning January 8, effectively isolating the Iranian population from the outside world while security forces moved to silence dissent. Sa’ar characterized the actions as a deliberate campaign of terror against civilians, emphasizing that the primary victims were ordinary Iranians demanding basic freedoms.

Azerbaijani officials in attendance were described as attentive and openly receptive, reinforcing the significance of the setting. The speech highlighted the growing strategic alignment between Israel and Azerbaijan, particularly in the areas of defense, energy cooperation, and regional security. By delivering such a forceful message so close to Iranian territory, Sa’ar underscored what Israel views as Tehran’s increasing isolation in the region.

The address served not only as a moral indictment of Iran’s leadership but also as a geopolitical signal. It reflected Israel’s intent to work closely with regional partners that reject Iranian aggression and repression, while reminding Tehran that its internal brutality and external destabilization efforts are being closely watched and openly challenged beyond its borders.
