Amazon has acquired RIVR, a Zurich-based robotics startup specializing in wheeled-legged quadruped robots designed for real-world doorstep delivery. The deal, announced in March 2026, brings the ETH Zurich spinout into the e-commerce giant’s growing portfolio of physical AI systems. RIVR’s hybrid robots combine legs and wheels to navigate stairs, curbs, uneven surfaces, and snowy urban terrain that traditional wheeled delivery bots cannot handle. A recent video shared by robotics engineer Chris Paxton shows one of the machines climbing stairs, balancing on railings, and moving confidently through winter conditions. The acquisition underscores Amazon’s push to automate the final meters of package delivery, long considered one of the most stubborn challenges in logistics.

RIVR began as Swiss-Mile, emerging from the Robotic Systems Lab at ETH Zurich under the research tradition associated with advanced legged platforms. The company rebranded and shifted focus toward commercial last-mile applications, developing systems capable of carrying packages directly to a customer’s door. Its robots can travel at meaningful urban speeds while maintaining the agility needed for residential environments. Unlike sidewalk robots limited to flat pavement, RIVR’s design allows them to handle elevation changes and irregular ground without requiring human intervention at every obstacle. This capability has positioned the technology as a practical solution for dense cities and suburban neighborhoods alike.

Amazon’s interest in the startup predates the full acquisition. Both Bezos Expeditions and the Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund participated in RIVR’s earlier funding rounds, signaling confidence in the underlying approach long before the March deal closed. The company had raised roughly $25 million in total and was last valued near $100 million. By bringing RIVR fully in-house, Amazon gains direct control over the technology and the data generated by real-world deployments. Company statements around the acquisition emphasized accelerating the vision of general physical AI applied specifically to doorstep delivery at scale.

The robots are intended to operate as part of a broader last-mile system rather than as fully independent replacements for human drivers in every scenario. They can serve as mobile hubs or final-leg carriers that move packages from a van or local depot to the actual door, including multi-story buildings. Demonstrations have shown the machines managing snow, climbing steps, and maintaining balance on narrow or elevated surfaces. These abilities address the precise pain points that have limited earlier autonomous delivery experiments. As Amazon continues testing and integrating the platforms, the focus remains on reliability, safety, and cost efficiency in everyday conditions.

The move fits into a wider industry trend of major logistics players investing in legged and hybrid mobility systems. While wheeled robots have proven useful on controlled campuses and flat sidewalks, the last stretch to the doorstep often involves stairs, gates, and variable weather. RIVR’s technology was developed specifically to close that gap. With Amazon’s operational scale and resources now behind the effort, the robots are expected to see expanded real-world trials and eventual broader deployment. The acquisition also highlights the continuing transfer of advanced robotics research from European academic labs into commercial applications.

For customers, the long-term promise is faster and more consistent deliveries even in challenging environments. For Amazon, the technology offers a path toward reducing the physical burden and cost of the final delivery step. As videos of the robots navigating snow and climbing stairs circulate, the practical potential of physical AI in everyday logistics becomes clearer. The Zurich-originated platform now sits inside one of the world’s largest delivery networks, ready to be tested and refined at scale.
