Dramatic footage circulating online shows the smoking aftermath of an Israeli strike in western Khan Yunis, where a targeted vehicle hit left thick black smoke rising over the street, a burning wreck at the center of the blast, and crowds of men moving through the rubble carrying whatever they could salvage. Israel says the strike killed Mohammad Abu Elwan, a senior Hamas finance official it accuses of helping rebuild the group's terror infrastructure since the October 2025 ceasefire took hold. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the operation in a joint statement, framing it as part of a broader campaign to choke off Hamas's finances before the group can regroup. Palestinian medics reported two men killed in the strike, Abu Elwan and a second man identified as Osama Abu Khater, along with two others wounded nearby.

The strike lands squarely in the middle of a ceasefire both sides accuse the other of violating, with Israel insisting it is acting preemptively against rebuilding terror networks and Palestinian officials pointing to a mounting civilian toll under the supposedly fragile truce. More than 1,400 Palestinian deaths have now been tallied in Gaza since the US-brokered agreement took effect, a figure that has fueled growing scrutiny of how durable the ceasefire really is. Israeli leaders have made clear this is not an isolated move, vowing that operations against Hamas's leadership and financial networks will continue without pause. Hamas has not yet issued a public response to the strike or to Israel's claims about Abu Elwan's role within the organization.
