Mount Semeru in Indonesia erupted on November 19, 2025, producing a massive pyroclastic flow that raced over 14.5 kilometers from the summit at speeds exceeding 400 km/h. The eruption sent a towering ash column up to 54,000 feet into the atmosphere, prompting authorities to raise the alert to Indonesia’s highest level.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation reported that the pyroclastic flow and associated ashfall posed extreme hazards to communities in the surrounding areas, with potential for widespread damage to homes, agriculture, and infrastructure. Residents were advised to evacuate immediately from high-risk zones, and emergency response teams were mobilized to assist in monitoring the volcano and coordinating disaster mitigation efforts.

The eruption represents one of the most significant recent events at Mount Semeru, which has a history of explosive activity. Authorities continue to track the volcano’s activity closely, emphasizing public safety and readiness in the face of rapid-moving volcanic flows and extensive ashfall that threaten nearby populations.
