Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet is not being subtle about it: artificial intelligence, he says, is now fundamental to everything the defense giant does. Speaking with Bloomberg's Ed Ludlow ahead of the network's Defense Tech Special this Friday, Taiclet laid out how deeply AI has been woven into the company's roadmap, from weapons development to battlefield operations. Central to that push is Lockheed's long-running partnership with Nvidia, which supplies the graphics processing power behind the company's most sensitive national security work. The relationship dates back to 2020, when Lockheed quietly built a secure internal AI Center, pooling Nvidia GPUs to handle classified projects that couldn't touch the open cloud.

That investment is already showing up on the battlefield. Lockheed's AI-powered counter-drone system, known as Sanctum, is built to detect, track, and take down swarms of enemy drones without firing a single shot, while separate AI tools now run predictive maintenance across the company's aircraft, missile, and defense platforms. The moves reflect a broader shift among major defense contractors, who are increasingly turning to commercial AI partnerships to speed up autonomy, edge computing, and mission-critical capabilities, all while trying to keep the work locked down to military-grade security standards. As rivals race to keep pace, Taiclet's comments suggest Lockheed sees AI not as a side project but as the foundation its entire future is being built on.
