President Donald Trump declared that the removal of Nicolás Maduro from power creates an extraordinary opportunity for both Venezuela and the United States, signaling a new chapter in hemispheric relations and energy markets.

In remarks following a U.S. military operation that resulted in Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, being captured in early January 2026 and brought to the United States to face criminal charges, Trump emphasized the potential for economic recovery in Venezuela and lower energy prices for American consumers. The President underscored the longstanding ties between the two nations’ energy sectors, noting that decades ago the United States helped build Venezuela’s oil industry with American technology, expertise, and capital — assets that were expropriated without compensation under prior regimes. Trump said those assets, once returned to productive use, will benefit both countries.

“Now, we’re doing everything about it,” Trump stated, framing the military and legal actions against Maduro as decisive enforcement of justice for crimes including facilitating illegal migration and drug trafficking that harmed both nations. The unprecedented operation — described by the administration as a law-enforcement mission executed with military precision — has drawn global attention and controversy but, in Trump’s view, advances core U.S. interests by dismantling a corrupt narco-state and restoring lawful governance.

Following the operation, the administration announced plans to manage Venezuela’s governance temporarily, aiming to stabilize the country’s shattered economy and reintegrate it with global markets. U.S. officials are formulating a strategy to oversee the rebuilding of Venezuela’s oil production, which had dwindled to around 800,000 barrels per day before the intervention, far below its historical peaks. By selectively easing sanctions and facilitating investment, the Trump Administration seeks to tap Venezuela’s vast reserves and increase output in ways that contribute to global energy security and lower domestic fuel costs for Americans.

In a January 9 meeting at the White House with major oil executives, Trump outlined plans for up to $100 billion in U.S. investment in Venezuela’s energy sector, signaling confidence in the country’s long-term potential. To support this effort, he issued an executive order protecting Venezuelan oil revenue held in U.S. accounts from seizure by courts and creditors, clearing a critical legal hurdle that previously deterred investment and commercial activity. The order coincides with agreements to market an initial 50 million barrels of Venezuelan crude to U.S. refineries, a move expected to strengthen supply chains and provide direct benefits to the U.S. energy market.

Supporters of the administration praise these measures as a “win-win” for the hemisphere: Venezuela can rebuild its economy and infrastructure under responsible stewardship, while the United States secures a more stable and affordable energy future. In this vision, Trump asserts that American industry, ingenuity, and leadership will help transform a once-mismanaged oil giant into a reliable partner, benefiting Venezuelans and American consumers alike.
