BESSENT: Growth Is the Only Way to Conquer America’s $40 Trillion Debt

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed the U.S. national debt reaching $40 trillion by declaring that economic growth is the solution to the mounting burden. In clear and confident terms, Bessent stated that growth is the way to take care of this mountain of debt. He rejected the idea that austerity or higher taxes should be the primary response. Instead, he pointed to accelerating American growth as the path forward.

Bessent predicted that as U.S. growth picks up, the economy will over time perform well above the trend averages projected by the Congressional Budget Office. He expressed confidence that stronger expansion will improve the debt outlook without relying on painful spending cuts or tax increases. The Treasury Secretary framed higher growth as both achievable and essential. His comments projected optimism about America’s capacity to outpace long-term forecasts.

In addition to outlining the domestic strategy, Bessent encouraged other nations to follow the same growth-focused approach. He suggested that countries around the world should prioritize policies that expand their economies rather than simply managing decline. By linking U.S. success to a broader global recommendation, Bessent positioned American economic policy as a model. The message was that growth, not austerity, offers the most sustainable answer to high debt levels.

Bessent’s remarks come as the national debt hits the $40 trillion mark, a figure that has fueled widespread concern. Rather than dwelling on the size of the burden, the Treasury Secretary emphasized the power of a stronger economy to address it. His stance aligns with an administration preference for pro-growth policies aimed at expanding the economic pie. With growth expected to exceed CBO projections, Bessent presented a clear and assertive vision for handling the debt through expansion rather than contraction.
