A privately developed rocket reached orbit from continental European soil for the first time in history on September 5, 2026, when German company Isar Aerospace launched its Spectrum rocket from the Andøya Space Center in northern Norway. The mission, dubbed "Onward and Upward," marked Isar Aerospace's first successful orbital flight and represented a significant step for Europe's commercial launch sector, following the company's earlier attempt in March 2025. That first Spectrum launch suffered an anomaly and crashed back to Earth less than a minute after liftoff, prompting a two-month investigation before the company committed to a second attempt. Sunday's flight came after multiple delays throughout the year caused by weather, technical issues, and even disruption from a rogue boat near the launch site. Spectrum chief engineer Nikolaos Perakis called the achievement historic in real time during the launch webcast, saying the moment was "making history for Spectrum, making history for Isar, making history for Europe."

Spectrum is a two-stage launch vehicle designed and manufactured almost entirely in-house by Isar Aerospace, built to carry up to 1,000 kilograms of payload to low Earth orbit or up to 700 kilograms to sun-synchronous orbit. Isar Aerospace CEO and co-founder Daniel Metzler celebrated the launch as opening space access from continental Europe, stating that launch capacity has long been the largest bottleneck for the global space industry and that a genuine alternative now exists for commercial and institutional customers. Metzler added that the company achieved within a few years what had taken the broader European space industry decades to accomplish. Germany's Ministry for Research, Technology and Space celebrated the launch as well, describing it on social media as a milestone that impressively demonstrates the country's innovative strength and technical expertise.

The achievement carries broader strategic significance for Europe, which has historically depended on launch sites outside the continent, such as the European Space Agency's spaceport in French Guiana, for its orbital missions. Analysts have framed the launch as part of Europe's broader push to boost its ability to independently send satellites into space rather than relying on launch capacity from the United States or other outside providers. Isar Aerospace says it has since secured additional funding to develop new rockets and expand its testing and launch infrastructure, and the company is also developing a second launch site in Canada. With vehicles already in production for future missions and a new manufacturing facility near Munich set to open later this year, Isar Aerospace appears positioned to build on this milestone as demand for independent space access continues to grow across the continent.
