Grand Haven’s iconic lighthouse in Michigan was dramatically transformed in January 2026 as a powerful Arctic front swept across the Great Lakes region, encasing the structure in thick layers of ice. Subzero temperatures combined with relentless waves from Lake Michigan created a striking winter scene as freezing spray coated the lighthouse from base to top.

The ice formation occurred when strong winds, reaching speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, drove lake water against the structure. The supercooled spray froze instantly upon contact, gradually building dense sheets of ice along the railings, tower, and pier. While this phenomenon is a recurring feature of Great Lakes winters, this year’s conditions intensified the effect, producing unusually heavy accumulation.

Local weather outlets reported that the Arctic air mass significantly amplified wave action and freezing conditions, accelerating the ice buildup. The result was a near-sculptural coating that turned the lighthouse into a frozen landmark, drawing attention to both the beauty and danger of winter along Lake Michigan’s shoreline.

Officials continue to warn the public to exercise caution during such extreme weather, as ice-covered piers and structures can become hazardous. The frozen lighthouse stands as a powerful reminder of the force of nature during Midwest winters and the impact of Arctic air on the Great Lakes region.
