Federal agents pulled off a rare and dangerous maritime bust this week, stopping a 27-foot smuggling boat near Key Largo carrying 23 migrants, including 13 Chinese nationals. CBP and the Coast Guard spotted the overloaded vessel during an aerial patrol and moved in fast, boarding the boat off the Florida coast before it could reach shore. Officials called the crossing extremely dangerous, the kind of open-water run that has already proven deadly for migrants attempting it in small, unstable boats. Among those detained was a Cuban national suspected of piloting the smuggling operation, now facing federal charges alongside the interdiction.

What has investigators paying close attention is who was on board. Chinese nationals rarely attempt these Caribbean sea routes, which have traditionally carried Haitian, Dominican and Cuban migrants, since most Chinese migrants in recent years crossed by land through California and Texas. With those land routes now tightly locked down under stepped-up border enforcement, sources say smuggling networks appear to be adapting, pushing migrants toward far riskier ocean crossings instead. Aerial infrared footage from the operation shows U.S. vessels closing in on the suspect boat in real time, a rare look at just how coordinated these air and marine enforcement missions have become.
