Israeli security forces announced Thursday that they had killed Farah Hamed, a longtime Hamas military wing operative, in a strike carried out the previous day in the central Gaza Strip. The joint announcement from the IDF, the Israel Security Agency, and the Israel Police described Hamed as a senior figure who had served in Hamas's so called West Bank Headquarters, a unit involved in recruiting and directing operatives to advance attacks in Judea and Samaria. The strike itself was executed by the Israel Police's elite Gideonim unit, also known as Unit 33, working jointly with the Shin Bet and the IDF, and took place in Gaza City's Sheikh Ijlin neighborhood. Hamas confirmed the death separately, describing Hamed as a commander and fighter in its military wing and a member of its Military Council for the West Bank.

Hamed's history stretched back more than two decades to the Second Intifada, when he belonged to the Silwad cell, a group tied to a series of deadly shooting attacks across the West Bank in the early 2000s, including the killing of Israeli civilian Shalom Har Melech among other victims. He was eventually captured and sentenced before being released to Gaza in 2011 as part of the prisoner exchange that freed Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, one of more than a thousand Palestinian security prisoners deported as part of that deal. Rather than stepping away from militant activity, Israeli officials say Hamed resumed his role within Hamas's military wing after the swap, working to recruit and direct operatives toward further attacks in the West Bank. He reportedly survived multiple earlier targeting attempts, including during previous rounds of conflict in Gaza, before finally being killed this week.

His death continues a pattern Israel has followed throughout the current war, in which it has specifically targeted a number of the Shalit deal releasees it accuses of returning to militant activity after their release. Notably, the leader of the same Silwad cell, who was also freed in the 2011 exchange, was killed in a separate strike in Rafah back in May 2024. Knesset Member Limor Son Har Melech, widow of Shalom Har Melech, responded publicly to the news, calling it a moment when "another circle closed" and describing decades of pain that had not faded despite the passage of time since her husband's killing.

The strike adds to a broader and ongoing Israeli campaign against individuals it links to Hamas's efforts to rebuild military capability and plan future attacks, both inside Gaza and in the West Bank. As of Wednesday evening, the IDF itself had not issued a formal statement on the strike, with initial confirmation coming instead through Palestinian media reports before the joint Israeli security announcement followed the next day. Palestinian officials also reported that Israeli forces later entered Silwad, near Ramallah, and approached a condolence gathering set up in Hamed's memory, though the IDF has not commented further on that report. As Israel continues its operations against former Shalit deal detainees and other Hamas operatives, the episode underscores how deeply the consequences of that 2011 exchange still echo through the conflict today.
