Iranian Christian Refugee Begs Council to Block Islamic Center

An Iranian Christian refugee stood before the McKinney, Texas, City Council and identified himself as a “Sharia law survivor” while urging officials to reject a proposed 5-acre Islamic center. Speaking at the August 4, 2026, meeting, the man shared personal experiences from Iran and warned that the project could bring unwanted cultural and legal influences into the community. His emotional testimony became one of the most closely watched moments of the hearing. More than 100 residents also delivered heated public comments, many echoing concerns about Sharia and the scale of the development.

Despite the volume of opposition, the council voted unanimously to approve the McKinney Islamic Association’s site plan. Officials stated that the proposal fully complied with existing zoning and development standards, leaving them little legal ground to deny it. The decision disappointed many speakers who had asked the council to consider broader community impacts beyond technical requirements. The refugee’s firsthand account of life under Sharia law stood out as a particularly stark warning.

The meeting highlighted deep local divisions over the project and the limits of municipal authority when applications meet all formal criteria. Supporters of the center argued it would serve the area’s growing Muslim population and posed no threat. Opponents, including the Iranian Christian speaker, maintained that the council should have weighed the social and cultural implications more heavily. The approval allows the Islamic center to move forward on the designated five-acre site.

The refugee’s plea has since circulated widely, with many viewers describing his words as a rare and urgent perspective from someone who fled the very system he fears could take root. While the council’s decision is final under current rules, the intensity of the public response suggests the debate over similar projects is far from over in North Texas. Residents on both sides continue to watch how the development proceeds.
