A large banner declaring a distinction between Judaism and Zionism was displayed above the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The banner, visible to motorists traveling along the BQE, carried the message: “Judaism & Zionism Are Incompatible — Jews Are Not Zionist!”

Video and photos of the display circulated this week through Torah-based anti-Zionist organizations, which highlighted its placement in Williamsburg, home to one of New York's largest Chassidish communities.

The display reflects the position promoted by Torah Jews/Natruna and Voice of Rabbis that Judaism and political Zionism should not be treated as synonymous. Torah Jews, a Brooklyn-based organization, describes its mission as presenting Torah-based opposition to Zionism and emphasizing that the State of Israel does not represent Judaism or the Jewish people as a whole.

The Williamsburg banner comes amid renewed public debate over the relationship between Jewish identity and Zionism. A 2026 survey reported that only about one-third of American Jews personally identified with the term “Zionist,” while considerably larger numbers expressed support for Israel's existence, illustrating substantial differences over how the term itself is understood.
